Matika Wilbur and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
ways of understanding of the world
During the class, we watched a TED talk by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie tited ‘The danger of a single story’. It told us that the narratives shape ones understanding towards things, with example of her own childhood story. If the narrative was for a single perspective, the narrative will cause stereotype. The narrative is usually produced by the power, and can cause destruction of dignity.
However, story telling also can repair the hurt dignity, addressed by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. Similar to this idea, Matika Wilbur’s photographs aimed to show the real side of the Native Americans helped the viewers to develop a new understanding of the Native Americans produced the same point. The new narrative brought by Wilbur enhanced the viewers’ understanding of native americans.
